The South Dakota Homestead

These are some lovely photographs, in my grandmother's possession, of the farm in Castlewood, South Dakota that my German side of the family owned for a very long time. The notes accompanying the images are my mother's. These are so special to me.

The house with horse and buggy: Castlewood, South Dakota. This is the farm house of Frederic R, the first of the R's clan to homestead in South Dakota. He migrated from Germany to Baraboo, Wisconsin in the 1870s.

The big square farm house: This is the photo of John and Jelka R's farm house. Pictured are John, Jelka (my greatgrandparents) and their sons Elmer and Roy. South Dakota around 1912.

Wide photo of field. Probably the back of the old homestead. People unknown. According to grandma R they were just hired hands. Castlewood, South Dakota.

Same house as the first photograph. Taken in 2000.

Frost

A few final snows before the thaw will set in. Ice broke on the river though and some sun.

Fou chew

Enjoying some spinach and looking cross. Sorry it's sideways!
